The clue’s in the title. Expect to see a battalion of royals amid the equine enthusiasts at this five-day event, undoubtedly loosened up by the fact that they’re on the private, splendidly regal turf of Windsor Castle in Berkshire. What better way to continue our monarch’s 90th birthday celebrations?
The Royal Windsor Horse Show, now in its 73rd year, started life as a wartime fundraising event and Her Majesty The Queen has attended every single year since 1943, showing excellent commitment to the cause, and the horse. She even competed when she was younger (which makes us wonder whether it’s poor form to try to beat HM, or poor form not to?).
Head to the Copper Horse Arena on Friday morning to spot her watching her homebred Highland ponies in action. There’s even a Shetland Pony Grand National, adding a charmingly Hobbit-sized aspect to proceedings. It’s a formal type of affair: if you’re in the Members’ Enclosure, “blue jeans or blue denim, jeans, jeggings, trainers and Converse footwear and sports attire are not permitted”. Our vintage army truck turned travelling bar, The Mucky Pheasant, will be at the Copper Horse Arena from Wednesday 11th until Sunday 15th May – stop by to admire excellent equestrian skills and British regalia while enjoying drinks aplenty. Who knows? Maybe even Her Majesty will stop by for a G&T…
